How to be successful at Twitter

by Sarah Watts

Twitter is no doubt currently the fastest growing social networking websites in the world and if you are not leveraging its phenomenal growth you are really missing out on a big chance.  The basic philosophy behind Twitter is that you have to broadcast your message in just 140 characters. If people find your tweets interesting enough they start following you and the more people follow you the easier it becomes to disseminate your message.

But how can you be successful at Twitter; how to grow your popularity so that more and more people follow you and pay attention to what you have to say? Frankly people just don’t start following you and listening to you; you have to make yourself recognizable and people should be able to respect you for what you have to say. People who have already created their names in various fields find it easier to get followers because people love to follow successful and popular people.  It is the people who are just starting out who have to make lots of effort and establish personal contacts with others.  Here are a few things you can do to be successful at Twitter:

  • Personalize your profile: create a Twitter profile that gives an idea of who you are and what you do.  Keep it personal and in the first person.  Include your URL if you have one.  Use a photograph that can be easily attributed to you.  Many people use the logos of their businesses as Twitter avatars but this is not advisable.  As much as possible you should use your own photograph.  You can also change the background page of your Twitter profile page to showcase your logo, the services that you provide and if possible, contact information.
  • Don’t just follow celebrities and popular Twitter users: if you want to create your own community you shouldn’t be driven by popularity charts.  Follow people who can really converse with you.  Although it is beneficial to follow popular individuals if they share lots of information that you can use, if they don’t follow you back and are not interested in what you have to say, you should be very selective.
  • Don’t just post your own links: social networking websites thrive on people sharing useful information. Some people use their Twitter accounts simply to post their blog links or website pages. This doesn’t work unless you are Britney Spears.  Remember that you are sharing useful and informative content with your followers.  You should also try to strike a conversations with your followers.  Pay attention to what they are talking about and express your own opinion whenever you can.
