How To Become A Better Writer

by admin on October 10, 2007

If you want to become a better writer my advise would be, write! And I’d stop at that. I think you can never become a better writer, you can never improve your writing if you write less and think about writing more. This is a big problem on the Internet. You’ll find thousands of tips and tricks on becoming better writers and most will include:

  • Stick to the point
  • Don’t beat around the bush
  • Use simple language
  • Be conversant
  • Show, don’t tell

All these point are fine, in fact great, and they help you write better, certainly, but you can only excel as a writer if you write a lot. When you write a lot, you continuously exercise your "writing" part of the brain, you train your body and mind to write. You should write so much that writing becomes a second nature to you.

Following a methodology is important in order to become a better writer

  • Inculcate a habit of reading and analysis. Don’t just read the book and be done with it. Observe how the author handles different expressions. Try to learn how the characters evolve and how their characteristics and natures affect the story. If it’s non-fiction, then think about the facts mentioned in the book and try to write down your own version.
  • Complete your draft without worrying about individual paragraphs and sentences. Just finish the damn thing from the first sentence to the last one. After that you can re-write it hundreds of times if you feel like; this is the benefit of having computers these days, word processing has become so easy.
  • Don’t seek too many opinions while you are writing. This can really dampen your writing enthusiasm and tone. Writers are sensitive. Even a slight negative remark can destroy an entire book. Even if you seek opinions or if you get them without asking for them, have confidence in yourself and be proud of your work.
  • Learn continuously. As a writer learning never stops because there are always better ways of writing the same things.

Last but not least, don’t read too much about how to write :-) .
