How To Choose A Niche For Your Blog

This is perhaps the most important question a newbie blogger ever faces: how to choose a niche for your blog? It’s your niche that is going to decide how well you are going to perform as a blogger and how your posts are going to be taken by your readers. Why this is so?

The meaning of a niche for your blog

Choosing a niche for your blog means, deciding on what topic/topics you are going to write on your blog; what niche topics. You can’t just one day get up and decide that you’ll blog. I mean, you can do that, and nobody can stop you from doing that but when I say that it’s important to choose a niche for your blog, I say it from the perspective of those bloggers who want to create a successful blog (successful in terms of generating traffic, and consequently, money). In order to have a successful blog you have to:

  • Generate quality content day after day.
  • Interact with your readers as much as you can.
  • Interact on other blogs and online forums that cover the niche of your blog.
  • Guest blog on other blog.

All this writing and interacting means you should have lots of interest in your blog topic, in your niche. You should keep in mind that before you can make any significant progress in terms of traffic and money you may have to work really hard for a few months. There will be times when no one will visit your blog and the revenue will be practically non-existence. So at that time the only thing that can see you through is your passion, the interest that you have in your niche. Without a passion, without an interest, you’ll get bogged down and disenchanted and soon, thinking that your blog is never going to succeed, you’ll quit. But if the niche interests you, you’ll keep on writing about it, learning new things, and then sharing them with one or two readers who may visit your blog.

So how to choose a niche for your blog?

Write down the following questions to narrow down your niche:

  • What really gets you going? Do you have a passion? Can you talk about that passion incessantly for a long period of time without running out of things to say? Can you write regularly on your niche and can you cover your topics compellingly?
  • Why do you want to blog? I know it’s a silly question, but still. If you know why you want to blog then it’s easier to decide about your niche.
  • Is there a demand for your niche? If not, can you put in enough effort to create the demand for it?
  • How many people are already writing about your niche topic? And if there are already many people covering the subject, what sort of uniqueness can you bring to the table? Why should readers prefer you about 10 other bloggers writing on the same subject?
  • Are you comfortable with the niche? This is also very important because if you have to put in lots of effort and if you don’t have that much time you’re soon going to lose the motivation if you don’t see positive results for a long time.
  • How easily can you find information on your niche?

All these questions can help you choose the right niche for your blog.

My site is a good example of a niche blog, I started it on the topic of .htaccess files dealing with the Apache Web Server, and after only 6 months I have jumped to the top 5 in google search for htaccess or apache htaccess, etc..

I enjoy blogging because it teaches me constantly how to write and be a better Webmaster.

    Great advice Amrit

Very well said the days of general rambalings are gone, and it is good to be in a niche, and be passionate about it.
