How to do private-anonymous browsing with FireFox

by Sarah Watts

You must have come across hundreds of tools that help you visit “certain” websites without leaving traces. The problem with all the browsers is that they cache the pages you visit, and they also remember the links that you have visited, and if you’ve been using some secret user name and password, they remember even that. Of course you can change the settings and instruct the browser not to save content and links so that you can always do private and anonymous browsing, but browsers have this ability switched on by default because it speeds up your browsing experience, helps you recall the links you would like to visit again and makes it easier to fill up online forms. Hence it is not advisable to turn this feature off.

With FireFox 3.5 you can do private browsing without having to change your default privacy settings. Simply go to Tools and then click Start Private Browsing. All your current tabs and browser windows are closed (and saved) and you start with a clean slate. Do whatever shady stuff you want to do. Once you have satiated your secret desires you can again go to Tools and click Stop Private Browsing. Whatever you have done during private browsing is saved. It’s like using a completely new installation. Once you stop private browsing, everything you were doing comes back naturally.
