Unfortunately, these days, people get confused between happiness and fun. If they are having fun they think they are happy. Fun is a feeling that is very short lived: you visited a pub, you danced in a club, you had sex with 10 different people in a week, these are all instances of fun. You can call it happiness but it is a circumstantial happiness and it vanishes the moment that experience ceases to exist. Happiness on the other hand is a long-term, long-lasting state of mind. When you are happy you have no problem with the world, you don’t feel like pursuing things that don’t matter, and you are totally at peace with being who you are and what you are. If you want to know how to find happiness in your life you need to learn to be content with your life. Contentment is happiness.
Knowingly or unknowingly we are all trying to find the elusive happiness. No matter how confused we get happiness is the ultimate goal. That is why we keep on saying, “I will be happy if I do this,” or “I will be happy after I have achieved that.” This makes your happiness circumstantial. So how to find happiness in your life without it being circumstantial? Live in the present; stop regretting the past and worrying about the future. It doesn’t mean repudiating your goals and discarding all responsibilities; it means being at peace with what has happened and what is going to happen. Be in the driving seat of your life instead of it randomly taking you here and there. Zen habits has a great post on how to find happiness in your life.
