How To Give Constructive Criticism
Have you ever tried criticizing without sounding critical? Constructive criticism requires some conscious training, or it can be learned even a few seconds: it all depends on your intention. What is your intention when you criticize somebody? Is it to nitpick and annoy the person by finding faults, or you want that person to really improve?
Let’s assume you criticize to help the other person. Even then sometimes unintentionally we end up hurting the person at the receiving end of criticism. The best way to avoid such a situation is to think why you are actually criticizing. You should also keep in mind that most people, unless they are your religious devotees, don’t take criticism kindly.
So what’s the best way of giving a constructive criticism?
- Focus on the problem and not the person.
- Convey to the person that you both need a solution.
- See the positive side first.
- Make some suggestions instead of simply pointing out the faults.
- Praise the person for all the good things he or she has done in the work.
