How to import your bookmarks from Firefox 2 into Firefox 3

by admin on June 19, 2008

Some people have been encountering problems after installing Firefox 3; for instance they don’t see the entire assortment of their old bookmarks! Now, it takes years to collect bookmarks and it is the great tragedy if they vanish after installing a great browser. But you shouldn’t lose your heart; if you have upgraded from Firefox 2 to Firefox 3 you can easily import the old bookmarks into the new Firefox. Firefox stores all the bookmarks files in a separate folder under your user folder under Documents and Settings, in case of Windows XP. Before you can import your bookmarks from Firefox 2 into Firefox 3 you need to make sure that all your hidden files are visible. If you don’t know how to make your hidden files visible in Windows XP carry out the following steps:

  • Open up My Computer
  • Click Tools from the top menu
  • Click Folder Options…
  • Click the View tab
  • Under Hidden Files and Folders select Show Hidden files and Folders

This needs to be done because the Application Data folder that you will need to access while importing your bookmarks is usually a hidden folder in Windows XP.

In order to import your bookmarks from Firefox 2 into Firefox 3 just do the following:

  • Go to your Firefox window
  • Click Bookmarks
  • Click Organize Bookmarks…
  • Click Import and Backup
  • From the drop-down menu click Import HTML
  • Go to the appropriate folder
  • Import the file

The path of your bookmarks file should be

C:\Documents and Settings\Your_User_Name\Application Data\Mozilla\FireFox\Profiles\
Some_Weird_Name\bookmarkbackups\the_files

By hovering your your mouse pointer on individual files you can make out what file you would like to import.
