You need to improve your skills continuously both for your professional and personal growth. When you acquire new skills and improve your existing skills you gain a competitive edge over the others and you respect your professions and consequently, yourself. This is more so important if you work as a freelancer because by improving your skills continuously you can keep providing your clients a better service and give them a reason to choose your services over other freelancers. By improving your skills you can also work faster and hence take up more assignments.
But life being so hectic, do you have enough time to keep improving your skills? Sure you do. Do it in smaller portions. For instance, if you are a programmer, try to improve the way you do your coding. Can you create compact and efficient code? Can you find a better, faster way of doing the same thing?
Even if you do some other work, for instance, writing, you can keep improving your writing skills by continuously improving your vocabulary, writing style, information gathering and conceptualization. You can, by paying attention, learn how other writers convey the same expressions differently, in a more better manner.
Freelance Switch has a nice blog post on how to continuously sharpen your skills.
