How to read messages in Gmail using keyboard shortcuts

by Sarah Watts

Gmail has a plethora of features and one of them is using the keyboard shortcuts to navigate around different messages.  The Gmail development team claims that once you have logged in you don’t have to use your mouse to read messages; all the messages can be accessed using various keyboard shortcuts. For instance, you can move up and down using j and i respectively.

But the keyboard shortcuts cannot be used immediately, you have to enable them. You can enable the keyboard shortcuts feature in Gmail by clicking Settings (you can find it at the top of your screen) and then selecting the “Keyboard shortcuts on” radio button on the General tab. Once you do this you can use keyboard shortcuts in Gmail.  A comprehensive list of all the keyboard shortcuts that can be used inside your Gmail account can be accessed at this link.
