How To Stop Email Spam
OK, you may think this topic has been beaten to pulp, but I noticed there are still many people looking for how to stop email spam, so I thought, well, since I’ve never written on this particular topic, I’ll give you my take on how to stop email spam.
Maintain public and private email accounts
Since you can get an email account for free, easily, keep separate email accounts for your public and private email communications. You can use your public email address to leave comments on blogs, on forums and social media websites.
In case you want to use an email address for business purposes you need to use it publicly, and I’ll just tell you how to do it without letting spammers find your email address.
In your private email, only respond to trusted email addresses.
Many times you have to submit your email to download software and ebooks and there is no need to submit an email that you regularly use. In fact if you search the Internet there are many email services available these days that let you create temporary email accounts.
Don’t display your email on your website
Instead of displaying your email on your "contact us" page have a contact form and then have a server-side script email the contact message to you. This way nobody gets to see your email. If you don’t know how to create contact form you can use a service like Wufoo — this is a cool HTML form builder and lets you use the service for free if you get around hundred message from your website per month. After that it charges a small fee.
In case you cannot avoid putting your email address on your website then disguise it. Use an image instead of text, simply write something like yourIdAtYourDomainDotCom and people who are desperate enough to write to you will figure out the correct email address.
Don’t respond to spam
If you respond to spam, you get more spam because your email address gets confirmed as an active email address. Completely ignore spammy messages no matter how enticing they seem. Don’t even click the links present in your spam emails.
Report spam
If your country has a spam reporting agency or website then forward all spam to them. I think you can also report to email services like Yahoo! and Gmail because they must also be too interested in eliminating spam.
