How to use FTP in Ubuntu

by Sarah Watts

Just like in Windows you can FTP files to a remote server in Ubuntu without having to use an FTP client. Although there are many FTP clients available for Ubuntu, but if you simply want to transfer some files from your local PC to the remote server, you can simply FTP them using the regular Ubuntu interface.

Using Ubuntu’s main menu, click Places, then Connect to server…this brings you to this screen:

If you don’t plan to use “Public FTP…” from the drop-down box choose Service type as FTP (with login)

After that you can fill up the usual information and connect to the FTP server. Of course it will ask for a password and once you are connected, it will display the remote server files just as normal window. You can drag-drop files and it will upload them.

I haven't used KFTPGrabber so far, but in most of the FTP clients on the right hand side are displayed the contents of the remote FTP server. They are not visible unless you have connected.
