Have you just started using Pidgin and you would like to use it with your Google apps email ID just like you do it with GoogleTalk. Pidgin is an instant messaging client that lets you manage multiple messaging services like GoogleTalk, Yahoo Messenger, MSN, ICQ, etc. through a single client.
You must be wondering why on earth should you use Pidgin if you can easily use your Google apps email address with GoogleTalk. If you are using Windows, there is not problem, but unfortunately, if you want to switch over to a Linux platform such Ubuntu, GoogleTalk doesn’t work, and for that Pidgin is the best option.
But the problem is, unlike the normal Gmail account, setting up your Google apps email account with Pidgin requires some extra settings.
In order to add a Google apps email ID to Pidgin, start Pidgin and click the Add button to add a new account (Accounts > Manage Accounts…).
Adding Google Apps email ID to Pidgin
- For Protocol: XMPP
- For Username: enter whatever is before @
- For Domain: enter whatever is after @
- For Password: enter whatever password you use to check your Google apps email address
- Leave all the boxes as they are
- For Connect server: enter talk.google.com
Don’t worry about the boxes being left blank. Click the Advanced tab
Click the Add button. Now you can use your Google apps email ID with Pidgin.
