Search engine optimization — SEO — is as important as having a website. Since most of the world uses search engines to look for information your page content should be able to convince the search engine ranking algorithms that the information the search engine user is looking for is there on your page. For that you need to write, and structure your content according to the (unwritten) SEO guidelines. These are not the sure-shot ways of getting your web page to the top (because a lot depends on competing pages) but they surely keep your page optimized when the search engine crawlers come a-visiting. Here a few things you can do to use your written content to SEO your web pages.
1] Have a unique page title
Your page title should represent the gist of your web page content. Put your main keywords and expressions in your title, but don’t use them needlessly. Suppose your page has information on "how to use your written content to SEO your web pages" then why not use this expression as your page title. Don’t try to be esoteric. State in the title exactly what your page does and this will help both the search engines and your human visitors. Please keep in mind that your page title appears as a highlighted hyperlink on the search result pages so it really matters what appears there.
2] Put the right description in the description meta tags
Although most of the meta tags are ignored by the search engines these days the Description meta tag is still relevant. Your description too appears in the search result beneath your hyperlinked page title.
3] Use your keywords once or twice in the first paragraph
When you use your keywords in the first paragraph — don’t overdo it because this can harm your rankings — it forces you to come to the point as early as possible. It’s easier for the search engine crawlers too if they find the relevant information early on. Highlight your keywords once or twice (but not every occurrence).
4] Arrange main points with headings and sub-headings
Headings and sub-headings make your content easy to scan and the search engines like that. Try to use a heading or a sub-heading after every two paragraphs and use your keywords in your headings and sub-headings.
5] Use your keywords in hyperlinks and bullet lists
Using your keywords as anchor text (text as hyperlink) and bullet lists. This conveys to the search engine crawlers that these keywords are important to your web page. Use keywords in hyperlinks mostly when you are linking to your own web pages.
These steps — depending on the competition and your overall relevance — should surely get your web page to the first page.
