Writing successful fiction is more than having a story. Although there can never be fixed rules — dos and donts — because different writers prefer different writing styles and different readers prefer different types of writings, still, there are some rules that definitely help you write successful fiction.
Some writers in this Guardian article titled Ten rules for writing fiction insist you don’t explain sceneries and situations must. Another stresses that always end and start dialogs with “said” and never use expressions like “groaned” or “grumbled” or “threatened”, but of course you don’t have to agree with that.
The best rule of course would be, create and follow your own rules when it comes to writing fiction.
