How to wake up early in the morning

Waking up early in the morning

Not everybody is a morning person. But it doesn’t mean we don’t want to wake up early in the morning, just like many other people we aspire to follow. It is not necessary that people who wake up early in the morning are more successful or achieve more in life, but you definitely get a head start in the day if you manage to get up early in the morning or much before people around you.

The benefits of getting up early in the morning

  • You get a head start: Since most of the activities in the world start in the morning if you can get up early you don’t get late to your office or your school, or wherever you need to head to. Just imagine, 20-30% of your work is already achieved by the time your colleagues or friends start their day.
  • You’re not rushed: When you start early you are not hard pressed for time and you can plan out your day in a relaxed manner. You’re not all the time catching up. You get to spend more time on the things you really want to do.
  • You waste less time: We waste most of the time in the evening or late in the night watching TV, partying out or simply browsing the web. When you know that you need to get up early in the morning (and are hellbent upon it) you go to bed early. It goes without saying that going to bed at 2 AM and getting up at at 6 AM is not advisable and it will be counter-productive. We all have our different sleep needs but everybody needs around 6-8 hours of sleep every 24 hours (kids need more than that). So when you try to stick to your daily quota of 8 hours of sleep, you try to get to bed as soon as possible.
  • You feel spiritually uplifted: There is a reason birds and many animals wake up as soon as the sun comes up. It is spiritually uplifting. Nothing compares to being a part of an early morning.

Well, whatever is the reason, if you’re not used to getting up early in the morning it can be very difficult and you need to take special steps in order to make yourself habitual of waking up early. These are a few things you can do:

Give yourself time

It’s not that you will start getting up early in the morning the very first day. The obvious thing to do is start preparing for it the previous day, for instance going to sleep early. Since your body clock is not attuned to this new schedule you may not succeed at falling asleep and then getting up on time. The basic idea is adjusting your sleeping hours in such a manner that you are ready to get up early in the morning without feeling tired or sleep deprived. So let your body take some time adjusting to the new schedule. It may take anywhere between 2-3 weeks before you can happily get up early.

It’s also about sleeping on time

As already mentioned above getting up early is of no use if you don’t go to sleep on time because your body requires at least 8 hours of sleep.

So if you want to get up at 6 o’clock in the morning then you must go to bed at 10 o’clock at night. Similarly the earlier you want to get up the earlier you should go to bed.

The greatest hurdle faced by people who are trying to get up early in the morning is sleeping on time the previous night. You may try out different things like having a relaxing bath, doing some meditation, having sex with your partner, reading literature, listening to some good music and creating the most relaxing environment you can manage inside your bedroom. Again, sleeping on time is as important as getting up early in the morning and unless you can achieve this there is little chance you will be able to sustain waking up early in the morning over a long period of time.

Motivate yourself

Why do you want to get up early in the morning? Is there some overwhelming reason or you simply think it is the right thing to do? The stronger is the reason the greater will be your motivation. As simple as it may seem, waking up early in the morning requires lots of resolve and mental strength. Every pore of your body will resist your attempt unless you are properly motivated. So have a solid reason to get up, whether it is health, or achieving more in life, or spending more time with your loved ones or generally improving your lifestyle.

Involve other family members

If everybody at your place goes to sleep very late it will be very difficult for you to get into your bed early. Unless you live alone it will have to be a collective effort. Unless sleeping late is a part of your career it is advised you should avoid it. This means talking to your family members and encouraging everybody to go to bed early and get up early as a result. You can plan a ritual to make it more exciting, something like prepairing special breakfasts, having bedtime story sessions, or anything that can make it into a family activity rather than an isolated effort. If you live with a family and if you are trying to sleep early and get up early on your own it will be very difficult to achieve specially if staying up late is the only way to interact with your family and spend time with them.

Let the light come in

It’s easier to get up if there is plenty of light in your room. If you can keep the window of your bedroom open, keep it open so that in the morning the natural light can come into your room. In case there are lots of insects and mosquitoes in your area, you can put a net on the window and then keep it open.

Getting up early in the morning can be one of the biggest lifestyle changes you try to introduce into your life so obviously you will need to plan and make lots of effort. So don’t feel disheartened when you don’t succeed initially. The trick is keeping yourself focused.
